11 years working at INFORS HT
In 2011, I joined the R&D team of a local biopharmaceutical company in Mexico. For my position and my daily work, I needed a very robust agitator, capable of operating 24/7. 11 years later, I applied to be part of the INFORS HT, LATAM team, an I'm here. I feel that the experience of being a user is very useful in my day-to-day life and makes me feel proud to be part of the INFORS HT, LATAM team.

The start of a shaker technology revolution
In 1991, INFORS HT revolutionized the industry with the invention of the Multitron incubator shaker, introducing the concept of the stackable shaker. Just a few years later, on a service visit to a customer, I saw this innovation first-hand—a double stack of Multitron 1 incubator shakers in an equipment room. It was immediately clear how this ground-breaking design allowed researchers to reclaim valuable lab space, eliminating the need for entire dedicated shaker rooms. The impact was undeniable—Multitron had sparked a revolution in the industry, quickly becoming the gold standard for incubator shakers worldwide.

A blast form the past: 20 year old Multitron shaker
Over 20 years ago, when I was selling INFORS HT shakers through another company, I sold a Multitron Incubator Shaker to Nick Rhind, PhD at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. After joining the INFORS HT sales team a few years ago, I stopped by to visit Nick, and to my amazement, his Multitron was still up and running!

The customer wanted to let the FAT burst because the welds on the base of the Multitron tower were not welded all the way around, but you only explained this at 11:30 p.m. on the middle bridge. I then informed production directly and they welded the base that morning as requested. When the customer wanted to continue looking after the FAT in the morning, the base was welded and the customer was very impressed. The base is now standard

A single vessel to 100 bioreactors
In 2017 we started with a two vessel 0.75L Multifors demo (a lead from a conference, up against multiple competitors). After 6 months of max RPM testing the team determined the INFORS HT Multifors was the most robust, efficient and flexible bench-top bioreactor for their fermentations. Starting in 2018 we installed over 40 more base units for two different processes. The customer now has multiple labs outfitted with high RPM bioreactors for gas fermentation which offer reliable consistent performance year after year.

The first hands on expression systems workshop
In 2005 when the Genome and Vaccine Institute was set up, we received the order against all odds, being a lesser-known company then. The project went on to be an immense success. It paved the way for the first ever international hands-on expression systems workshop. INFORS HT and the people involved have one heart and it is passion that drives us. It serves as testament to our willingness to go far and beyond. That has left an impression with the customer that is hard to beat.

Understanding the customer: Touchscreen 3 for bioreactors
Back in 2014, our bioreactor customers had challenges with the configuration of the touchscreens to match their bioprocess requirements. Knowledge on this was fragmented and spread thin within the organization and it took a great team effort and many customer visits get a clear picture. Our Product Management and R&D teams then put their heads together and improved this as part of the Touchscreen 3 launch in 2017, which turned our touchscreen from the black sheep to one of the key features of our bioreactors.

On the hunt for the CO2 source
In a large, multi-tenant building with occupants from various industries, we had a service call from a customer experiencing low CO2 readings on several Multitron incubator shakers. Finding no faults from the shakers, we traced the supply line back to the shared room containing the CO2 source. We discovered a leak causing insufficient gas delivery. The real surprise came when the customer disconnected the source without first closing the valve. The release of gas triggered a CO2 alarm that evacuated the entire building of over 200 businesses!

Our role in the COVID-19 pandemic
During the pandemic, I saw INFORS HT products featured on national news broadcasts multiple times. It was a powerful reminder of the critical role we play in supporting scientific advancements. Our shakers and bioreactors weren’t just in labs—they were directly involved in the development of U.S.-approved COVID vaccines. This was more than just a demonstration of our technology; it was proof of the trust researchers placed in INFORS HT service, support, and commitment to science. Knowing that our equipment contributed to such a global effort reinforced the importance of our work and the responsibility we carry in advancing research.

Customer collaboration: 3mm proof of concept
In 2016, during a candid lunch with Cell Signaling Technologies, they mentioned a need to increase their protein production in 96-well plates. I explained that our 3mm throw at 1000min-1 would do exactly that, but we did not have data to prove it yet. They could not conceptualize a this orbit and throw for HEK293 cells for fear of shearing forces. Their current application was a 25mm at 400min-1. To encourage experimentation, we ordered them a Multitron 3 mm incubator shaker at a discounted price in exchange for shared application notes in a side-by-side comparison. The results were so dramatically improved that the researchers earned an internal company recognition award. To this day, we still showcase this scientific poster presentation as proof of the impact the 3mm can have, and it has become INFORS HT’s standard optimization platform for 96-well plates.

A few years ago, a customer had a new device in the lab that was causing problems, Multitron 4 was wandering around the room - while I was on vacation of all times. Despite this, I organized spare parts from the parent company via email and discussed the possible firmware error. Immediately after the vacation, I drove to the customer with all the parts and a solution and was able to solve the problem immediately. The customer still has positive memories of the fast and smooth service to this day.

Joining INFORS HT: A Perfect Fit
Who would have thought a career twist would lead me here? From week one at INFORS HT, I saw the impact of the right team and mission. Having worked at different life science companies, it’s refreshing to be part of a team that takes pride in its history. Reading Alex’s story on day one confirmed it—I joined a company whose mission aligns with mine. Now, nearly two years in, that feeling has only grown, surrounded by a team driven to solve customer challenges.

Supporting biopolymer production
In 2006 we embarked on a niche area of bioprocess, the production of polyhydroxyalkanoates in a Labfors 3 bench-top bioreactor. The customer having limited funding for fundamental research opted to lease the machine from INFORS HT in Malaysia. The data generated made way for a project on a global scale involving University Sains Malaysia, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Berliner Hochschule für Technik etc. The Labfors performs flawlessly to this very day, and they have successfully scaled to a Techfors pilot bioreactor.

Ivy league SOP manual
Over a number of years, I sold seven INFORS HT Sixfors multi-vessel bioreactors to an ivy-league research group. Every year, new students would require operational training for the Sixfors, and I would come and spend a day or two operating the machine with these students and reviewing maintenance. Finally, the students wrote a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to pass along to the next group. My name and contact information appears in the troubleshooting section of this manual, and I take this as a high compliment.

Helping a Customer in Unprecedented Times
A 5PM Friday call from a Pharma company in North Chicago during the early weeks of COVID resulted in a late night emergency service visit to replace a drive belt on a Multitron incubator shaker. During the next few months of COVID this customer knew they could count on INFORS HT shakers and our service and support. We updated and installed eight new stacks of shakers over the next several months to help them to increase their R&D capacity and meet the growing needs of COVID testing products.

2014: USA INFORS HT subsidiary
I started in sales at INFORS HT, USA’s predecessor in 1999, and at the time, we sold a variety of lab machines like freeze dryers, PCR machines and imaging systems. We also sold INFORS HT shakers and bioreactors. My sales colleagues and I realized quickly just how good these products were, and by 2005, INFORS HT products constituted the majority of our overall sales. Eventually, in 2014, INFORS HT absorbed the majority of the organization and reconstituted it as INFORS HT, USA Inc. in Maryland. Since then, we have been able to reach new heights, and it has been a pleasure to do so.

Multifors systems in Calgary
In 2004, a potential customer received a quote for a Sixfors, but wasn’t ready to purchase at the time. Two years later, she decided to move forward, and the investment paid off. She was so impressed with the system that after relocating to Guelph, she expanded her setup— upgrading to the Multifors 2 bench-top bioreactor for gut infection treatment production. Today, her team operates 19 Multifors systems, a testament to their long-term trust in the technology.
